The case of Galileo is one of the most widespread modern historical myths, widely used by anti-Catholic propaganda, along with the anti-Spanish Black Legend. It surfaces even in the most unexpected places. For example, in the book A Song for Nagasaki, an excellent biography of Takashi Nagai, scientist, convert, and atomic bomb survivor, whose beatification process is underway, his biographer Paul Glynn, an Australian Catholic priest, states twice that Nagai's conversion was delayed due to his concern about the atrocities committed by Catholics throughout history, and cites four: a) the Crusades; b) the Inquisition; c) the genocide of native Americans in South America; and d) the case of Galileo. It is curious that Nagai says nothing about this in his autobiography, and it is surprising that a Catholic priest would fall for such historical fallacies.

Religious persecution of scientists?

This summer, Jesús Lizcano published an article in El Imparcial entitled. A memory for the scientists persecuted in history (my translation). He classifies the persecuted scientists into three groups: a) persecuted for political reasons; b) persecuted for religious reasons; and c) persecuted for reasons of sexual orientation. Here I am going to refer to those in the second group, which I find debatable.
Of course, among the eleven scientists persecuted for religious reasons, according to Lizcano, Hypatia and Galileo could not be missing. They are mentioned once and again, often with obvious exaggerations, as shown by the fact that many people believe that Galileo was burned alive by the Inquisition, when in fact he was sentenced to house arrest, softened over time. But here I am going to talk about the other nine mentioned in the article.

Does the Moon influence people?
Astrologers have been answering this question in the affirmative since time immemorial. It’s true that astrology has been discredited since a few centuries ago, to the point that another name had to be found for the science dedicated to the study of the stars (astronomy = laws of the stars). Despite which, in this supposedly scientific age, the mainstream media dedicate significant space to horoscopes and other astrological products.
Sometimes the influence of the moon has been confirmed. Since ancient times it was observed that the tides are related to the position of the moon in the sky, although it was not known how this influence could take place. To support the theory of Copernicus against that of Ptolemy, Galileo formulated a theory, according to which the tides are not due to the attraction of the moon, but to the translational movement of the Earth around the sun. In this case Galileo was wrong, because the influence of the moon is real, although it was not explained until Isaac Newton formulated the theory of universal gravitation.

What really happened in the history of cosmology

- Greek cosmology (with the
exception of Aristarchus of Samos) put the Earth at the center of the universe.
Plato and, above all, Aristotle established the idea that, since the sky
is perfect, the orbits of the planets must be exactly circular, because, for
them, the circumference is the most perfect curve of all.
- The Greek model explained well the movements of the sun and moon, and therefore made it possible to predict eclipses, but had a problem with the retrograde movements of the planets then known (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn). Three centuries before Christ, Apollonius of Pergamum proposed that the orbits of these planets are epicycles, circumferences centered on another circumference (the deferent), which in turn revolves around a point located near the Earth, but apart from its center (the eccentric).
