The prehistory of scientific popularization

Being interested in the world, being curious to find out the causes of natural phenomena, is as old as man, but in the strict sense one cannot speak of science until the invention of writing, as the knowledge communicated through oral transmission was disorganized, imprecise, and fragmentary. For science to appear, the body of knowledge must constitute a coherent and ordered whole, which was practically impossible before more permanent means of storing information than human memory could be used.

As soon as writing systems appeared in the Middle East, India, China and America, sciences began to develop. The first three were medicine, mathematics, and astrology. They arose for practical reasons: to cure diseases; for the good management of the economy; to predict natural phenomena related to the cycle of the seasons. The natural sciences (physics, chemistry, biology, and geology) were less necessary for early human societies, so they did not emerge until the Greek civilization.

Science or pseudoscience?

The word pseudoscience is defined as follows in the Cambridge Dictionary:

system of thought or a theory that is not formed in a scientific way

As for Wikipedia, it is defined like this:

statements, beliefs, or practices that claim to be both scientific and factual but are incompatible with the scientific method

We can deduce that pseudoscience is a theory or discipline presented as scientific, but not really scientific. The distinction between science and pseudoscience is important, because there are many pseudosciences, almost more than sciences, although sometimes it is difficult to distinguish them, because throughout history, ideas about what is scientific and what is not, have changed.

The Turing test

In 1950, in an article published in the Mind magazine, Alan Turing wrote this:
I believe that in about fifty years' time it will be possible to programme computers, with a storage capacity of about 109, to make them play the imitation game so well that an average interrogator will not have more than 70 per cent. chance of mating the right identification after five minutes of questioning.
Why precisely 70 percent? Because studies conducted, where some persons tried to deceive about their sex another person who couldn’t see them, gave that result. In seventy percent of the cases, the persons who had to guess if they were being cheated found the correct answer. In other words, what Turing said was this:
If the machine were able to deceive human beings, posing as human, with the same ease with which a human being can deceive another, it should be considered intelligent.
